On Saturday, May 21st, AWWA had an informational booth at the Wakefield Pride Day celebration.

The Great East Lake Improvement Association has joined with lake associations from Balch, Belleau, Lovell, Pine River Pond and Wilson to form The Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance (AWWA).  The focus of AWWA is to educate the public about how erosion causes pollution of our water bodies. A Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) will be created to correct erosion problems. A technical director will design solutions with homeowners and the YCC crew of local youth will provide the labor.
Linda Schier, using an Enviroscape from the UNH Marine Docents,  assists two of the many students who stopped by to learn about water pollution. The Enviroscape is a hands-on learning tool used to teach that the effects of rainfall on land that has been clear-cut, over-fertilized, salted, or contaminated with pesticides and toxic chemicals results in pollution to our water bodies.
Carol Lafond, Marge Kimball and Linda Schier along with Don Chapman and Pat Theisen answered questions and handed out material to the Pride Day crowds.  In addition to the Enviroscape, the booth contained a large map of the watersheds in the alliance, informational brochures describing our purpose and goals, before and after pictures of erosion problems solved by a Maine YCC.
